Which students benefit from phoneme awareness instruction?
- Students who are unable to identify individual sounds in one syllable words. "pig" " /p/ /i/ /g/"
- Students who do not know all of the sounds in the English language (e.g. /b/, /sh/)
- Students who guess wildly when reading - possibly based upon the beginning sound.
- Students whose spelling is incomplete or reflect a lack of awareness of ending or medial sounds.
"PA is an important foundation for learning to read. English is an alphabetic language in which phonemes - these tiny speech sounds - are mapped onto written letters for reading and spelling." Joanna K. Uhry, The Role of Phonemic Awareness in Learning to Read and Spell Successfully, Perspectives on Language and Literacy, Winter 2013.
